           Safeguarding and You

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We all need to be aware of our responsibility.

If something doesn’t seem right, report it.

If you are a learner with SAL and have any questions on Safeguarding including Prevent e.g. different types of abuse; possible signs of abuse or how to report your concerns, contact one of our SAL safeguarding team.  If you are not currently learning with us, please contact the Surrey Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) with any concern you may have.  Contact details below.

Safeguarding Adults Week is a time for everyone to come together to raise awareness of important safeguarding issues and to support people to feel confident in recognising signs of possible abuse and neglect and reporting safeguarding concerns. In today’s society there are new potential sources of abuse to consider.

Each day of the week has a different theme:

    • Monday – Exploitation and County Lines

The number of people at risk of exploitation has increased largely due to lockdowns and increased isolation and  economic concerns. In Surrey exploitation of vulnerable adults is one of the Surrey Community Safety Team’s current areas of focus Find out more at Serious and organised crime - Healthy Surrey

    • Tuesday – Self-neglect

The term self-neglect covers a wide range of behaviour neglecting to care for one’s personal hygiene, health or surroundings. Find out more at What is Self-Neglect? - Ann Craft Trust

    • Wednesday – Creating Safer Organisational Cultures

All SAL staff and volunteers receive safeguarding training to help them spot possible signs of abuse. If  you have a concern about someone else, want to talk about your own situation or simply have a question about any aspect of safeguarding including the Prevent Duty, contact one of our safeguarding team not just during this special week but at any time.

    • Thursday – Elder Abuse

Is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, within any relationship which causes distress or harm to an older person. The World Health Organisation  has found that rates of elder abuse have increased since the pandemic. Around one in six people aged 60 years and older experience some form of abuse in a community setting.

    • Friday – Domestic Abuse in Tech-Society

Technology can help keep people safe but abusers can also use technology to cause harm. Refuge has published resources to support people at risk of tech-abuse: Information and support on tech abuse | Refuge Tech Safety

    • Saturday & Sunday – Safeguarding in Everyday Life

Safeguarding is not only important at SAL, it is just as important in our communities and everyday life.

More information about Safeguarding is available on the Surrey Safeguarding Adults Board website and from the national charity Ann Craft Trust
